How the Fantom Blackout Plate Works
The Fantom Blackout Privacy Plate switches from clear to opaque black in an instant, at the press of a button. There are no moving parts, flaps or motors. The switch happens inside the glass itself. Here’s how.
The technology: PDLC smart glass
Fantom plates use PDLC (polymer dispersed liquid crystal) smart glass, the same kind of switchable glass used in privacy windows for offices, luxury homes and high-end vehicles.
Inside the glass is a thin film filled with microscopic liquid crystal droplets. When you press the remote, the receiver changes the electrical charge running through that film:
- Clear mode: the crystals line up and light passes straight through, so your plate is fully visible.
- Blackout mode: the crystals scatter in random directions and block the light, so the glass turns opaque black and your plate is hidden from view.
Because the change happens at the molecular level, switching is near-instant and silent, with nothing mechanical to wear out.

Press the remote, the receiver switches the power to the glass, and the plate changes mode. The indicator light always shows you which mode you’re in, so you never have to walk around to check.
