How to Install Your Fantom Blackout Privacy Plate
Installing your Fantom plate is simple and needs no drilling. Every cable is numbered, and a wiring diagram is included in the box, so you always know what connects where. Prefer video? Watch the full install guide on YouTube: https://youtu.be/TdLlPgin1O8
What’s in the box
- Mounting bracket with frame (aluminum alloy)
- PDLC switchable smart glass
- Mounting hardware and M4 grub screws
- Main extension cable
- Receiver box
- Remote control
- Interior indicator light
- Positive and negative battery cables
- Cigarette lighter power cable
- Wiring diagram
- Fantom sticker
Tools you’ll need
- Screwdriver
- Zip ties, recommended for tidy wiring
- Allen key for the grub screws
Step 1: Test your kit before installing
Before you mount anything, make sure everything works.
- Lay out the kit and connect it to power using the included wiring diagram. Follow the cables labeled 1 through 6, in order.
- Press the remote. The glass should switch from clear to opaque black, and the indicator light should turn on.
- Press the remote again to switch the glass back to clear.
Once it’s confirmed working, disconnect it and move on to the install.
Step 2: Feed the main extension cable through the plate light
We recommend routing only the main extension cable through your trunk’s license plate light opening. Push it through from the outside so about 4 inches of cable stay outside the vehicle, and the rest sits inside the trunk.
This way every other connection stays inside, where it’s dry and protected, and the outside stays clean.
Step 3: Make your connections inside the trunk
Inside the trunk, use the wiring diagram to connect the extension cable, receiver box and power cable, the same way you did in your test. Tuck the receiver somewhere dry and secure, such as behind the trunk lining.
Choose your power source:
- Direct to battery (cleanest): Connect the positive (red) cable to the positive terminal and the negative (black) cable to the negative terminal. This keeps the install hidden and permanent.
- Cigarette lighter (quickest): Plug the power cable into your 12V socket. Ideal for show cars, or if you’d rather not touch the battery.
Step 4: Install the indicator light
Place the indicator light somewhere you can see from the driver’s seat. It glows when your plate is in blackout mode and turns off when the plate is clear.
Step 5: Mount the back bracket
Remove your license plate. Screw the back piece of the Fantom bracket into your vehicle’s existing plate mounting holes. No drilling is needed.
Step 6: Connect and mount the plate
Connect the plate to the 4 inches of extension cable you left outside. Place your license plate onto the bracket, then set the front frame with the smart glass over the top. Tuck the connector behind the plate and lock the frame in place with the grub screws.
Step 7: Final test
Press the remote one last time. Check that the glass switches to black and back to clear, and that the indicator light follows. You’re done.
Wiring tips
- Keep cables away from the exhaust, hot engine parts and anything that moves, like trunk hinges.
- Secure loose wiring with zip ties so nothing rubs or rattles.
- If the plate doesn’t switch, check the wiring diagram, make sure every numbered connector is fully seated, and confirm your power source is live.
Motorcycle install
The Fantom Motorcycle plate (4x7) follows the same process: test first, then route and connect, using a 12V battery connection. Instead of a frame, it uses the included silicone backing plate, which holds the glass and your plate together and absorbs vibration. Mount the included handlebar switch where you can reach it easily while riding.
